Police refused to take a report for theft????

This is the story, My pet iguana whom I've had for a year was on my window sill inside my house looking out the window as usual. These contractors have been working on the building next door and I guess one and I know which one decided to put 2 holes in my screen, lift the screen, put his hands in my home and steal him. I had 3 witnesses as to this happening, of course they came forward after the fact rather than stop it. I called the police and they refused to take a report or do anything about it. This is not a small police agency, I expected something better than that. Isn't this a crime or is this just my imagination that a crime has taken place?
